Short Courses > Managerial Skills Development

Our Managerial Skills Development short course offers an innovative approach to generic skills development, whether personal, professional or managerial.

In today’s complex environments there is a need for managers to use a wide variety of skills and behaviours. These skills are made more challenging because at times they can seem contradictory. Today’s managers can be called upon to deal with performance issues at the same time as leading and coaching. In other circumstances they have to be entrepreneurial whilst cost cutting and even closing services and business units.

There are many opinions and much research has been conducted into what constitutes essential managerial skills. Even if these skills could be agreed upon it is highly likely that each individual manager would choose to and have to use them differently. As such this course focuses on how to develop and use appropriate skills with an awareness of their own particular style, as opposed to defining a particular skill set and then teaching a definitive way of utilising them.

Given this approach the course is suitable for a wide variety of managers and professionals working in the private, public and voluntary sectors.

A typical 2 day course outline would be as follows

  • How we generate awareness of the skills we need and how we use them.
  • How we make the decision to develop a skill and commit to it.
  • What methods lead to the effective acquisition of a skill.
  • How do we keep on improving our skills and striving for excellence.

In order to demonstrate this process we will examine ideas from

Experiential learning
Brain compatible learning
State management
Learning through our senses
Learning and individual differences.

The course is delivered over two days as either a public course or a bespoke corporate course to timescales and locations as desired. The workshops can be delivered nationwide to corporate groups but also to individuals when there is sufficient local demand. Ideally between six and twelve participants are required.

This course is one of three congruent courses designed to facilitate effective change in people and organisations:

•  The Coach Yourself Through Change course looks at assisting personal change.

•  The Change Management Principles course looks at developing awareness of, and the techniques behind managing organisational change.

•  The Managerial Skills Development course focuses on the learning processes that underpin generic skills development, whether personal, professional or managerial.
